FRAMELESS is adding to its immersive experience its most cinematic creation yet, a new immersive artwork inspired by Michelangelo’s celebrated frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Through animation, sound design, composition and cinematic visual effects, we’re inviting visitors to experience one of the world’s greatest artistic achievements from a new perspective. In this emotive interpretation, the frescoes have been transformed through animation, composition, sound design and cinematic visual effects, enabling the scenes from Michelangelo’s famous ceiling to interact with each other throughout the Experience. The new artwork reveals details often difficult to appreciate from the floor of the chapel itself, encouraging visitors to linger and engage with these Renaissance masterpieces in a new way.

Is this a recreation of the Sistine Chapel?

Accepted Answer

No. This is not intended as a replica or reconstruction of the Chapel itself. It is an original FRAMELESS immersive interpretation inspired by Michelangelo’s frescoes and works by other Renaissance artists. It sits alongside 42 other world-renowned artworks by artists including Monet, Van Gogh, Dali, Canaletto and Rembrandt, brought to life in breathtaking new ways. This artwork draws on elements of the Sistine Chapel, reimagining and reassembling some of the featured artworks into an immersive art experience.

Yes, from 10 July 2026 this new artwork can be discovered in our The World Around Us Gallery, alongside reimagined masterpieces from artists including Monet, Van Gogh, Hokusai and Rembrandt.

Yes. From 10 July, it becomes a permanent addition to The World Around Us Gallery.

The artwork lasts just over three minutes and plays as part of the wider gallery experience, allowing you to stay and watch it as many times as you like.

This Experience depicts artworks that have deep religious significance and cultural importance globally. Throughout the creative process the FRAMELESS team has undertaken to approach the artwork with the greatest respect to both the artwork and artist with the sole intention of celebrating the beauty, craftsmanship and artistic achievements of the masterpiece. The depictions of religious forms featured in the Experience are created in line with art historical precedent.

Can I take photos and videos?

Accepted Answer

Yes. FRAMELESS is a highly visual and shareable experience and visitors are welcome to take as many photographs and film the Experience at their own pace.

Can I sit or lie down during the experience?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A unique aspect of FRAMELESS is that visitors are encouraged to enjoy the Galleries at their own pace and can view the masterpieces as they choose; this includes lying down so they can appreciate the scale and detail of the artworks.

Is the experience suitable for children?

Accepted Answer

Yes. FRAMELESS is a family-friendly experience in London suitable for general viewing with parental guidance comparable to the PG rating for film and video content. Visitors should be aware and consider that some content may be unsuitable for younger children or those of a more sensitive disposition. Parental guidance is advised and children must be accompanied by an adult during their visit. For the enjoyment of everyone, we ask that you always supervise your children to ensure their behaviour is considerate of other visitors. Which works from the Sistine Chapel are featured in the new artwork?

Accepted Answer

Visitors will encounter a number of Michelangelo’s most recognisable frescoes, including The Creation of Adam , The Separation of Light from Darkness , God Separating Land from Sea and God Creating the Sun, Moon and Vegetation . The new artwork also includes works from other Renaissance artists who worked alongside Michelangelo in the decoration of the chapel. These comprise: Disputation of Moses’ Body by Matteo da Lecce, The Resurrection of Jesus by Hendrick van den Broeck, Temptations of Christ by Sandro Botticelli, Vocation of the Apostles by Domenico Ghirlandaio, The Sermon on the Mount , attributed to Cosimo Rosselli and The Delivery of the Keys by Pietro Perugino.

How accurate is the immersive artwork?

Whilst the immersive artwork is inspired by the original artwork, this is very much an artistic and creative interpretation rather than a literal recreation. It has been designed to work with the technology and space available within FRAMELESS.

How long did Michelangelo take to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling?

From 1508 to 1512 Michelangelo dedicated his time to painting the ceiling, which is enjoyed by millions visiting the Vatican Museums every year, one of the most visited cultural sites in the world. Within the Experience visitors will encounter an animated Michelangelo, shown gazing up at his masterpiece surrounded by the ingenious scaffolding he designed to create it.

No. FRAMELESS is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the Vatican Museums, the Holy See or the Vatican City State. This is an independent creative interpretation by the FRAMELESS team, inspired by Michelangelo’s frescoes and other artworks found in the Sistine Chapel all of which are in the public domain.

Who created the immersive artwork?

This new artwork is part of the FRAMELESS Immersive Art Experience, where 43 masterpieces from 35 artists have been brought to life by a creative team, led by FRAMELESS’ Creative Director Ryan ‘Woody’ Atwood. The team was made up of curators, renowned digital content talents, visual effects artists, sound designers, composers, technical experts and storytellers and is the culmination of thousands of hours of cross-functional teamwork.

Was AI used to create the experience?

The new artwork was created by an interdisciplinary team of artists, animators, technicians, curators, composers and sound designers, whose work shaped every aspect of the final piece. We used AI selectively as a production tool to support certain atmospheric effects, such as elements of the waves and clouds.

Why were Michelangelo's frescoes animated?

As with many of FRAMELESS’ masterpieces, animation and cinematic visual effects have been used to make the artwork more accessible than ever before, allowing visitors to experience one of the world’s most celebrated masterpieces in a completely new way. The creative team was inspired by Michelangelo’s work as a sculptor to bring some of the detail and stories from his frescoes onto the walls at scale, animating figures in 3D. Through this technique we are giving visitors a greater appreciation for the details and narrative connections that may otherwise be overlooked but always with the greatest respect to the artist and their work. In terms of religious figures, they have been created in line with how Michelangelo has depicted them in his frescoes, reflecting the historic moment during the Renaissance where artists really embraced representing God in human form for the first time.
